FRAMINGHAM – Geraldine “Gerry” (Cronin) Sullivan, 87, of Hopkinton, previously a long-time Framingham resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, May 13, 2021, after a long period of declining health.
Gerry was born in Boston on August 13, 1933, to the late Jeremiah J. Cronin and Mary K. (Keegan) Cronin and grew up in West Roxbury.
She was a 1951 graduate of Girl’s Latin School and a 1955 graduate of Framingham State Teacher’s College.
Gerry taught Home Economics in Stamford, CT and Walpole, before embarking on a long career raising five children and making a wonderful life for her family. Gerry and her late husband Skippy lived in the little red house at 3 Gates Street for 57 years. It was a favorite place, packed solid with friends and family on every holiday and special occasion. Gerry was a fabulous cook and consummate entertainer, but mostly she simply made everyone feel welcome.
Gerry loved the ocean and the beach. She and Skippy made many trips to Bermuda, Florida, and Cape Cod, where she especially loved Falmouth Heights and Osterville. As a child she enjoyed summer camp in Maine, and as an adult she spent summers at the pool with her friends. Gerry and Skippy also traveled throughout New England visiting favorite inns.
Gerry’s many hobbies included cooking, knitting, reading, entertaining, decorating for holidays, and playing her piano. Many a gathering culminated with a sing-along around the piano. She loved being dressed to the nines, with her hair and makeup just so. In later years, she embraced technology and kept in touch via social media, sometimes with amusing results.
“Gramma” adored her children and grandchildren, and was always their biggest supporter. She demanded good behavior; she could stop you in your tracks with “The Look” but just as quickly wipe away tears when things went wrong. Gerry was a force of nature, and will be terribly missed.
Gerry was a parishioner at St. Bridget Parish for over 70 years.
Gerry is survived by one son, Timothy F. Sullivan (Tricia); three daughters, Jennifer S. Nash (William), Judith S. McCarthy (Patrick), and Kate S. Myers (Joseph); son-in-law Michael F. Phipps (Debbie); sister Judith Traugott; sister-in-law Jean Sullivan; twelve grandchildren, Kevin, Kristin, and Amanda Sullivan; Alexandria, Brian, and Jeremiah Nash; Conor, Thomas (Ryan), and Margaret McCarthy; Austin Myers and Sarah (Myers) Moore (Liam), Samuel Phipps; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Gerry was predeceased by husband George P. “Skippy” Sullivan, daughter Monica S. Phipps, brother William Cronin, sister Mary-Joan (Cronin) (Doyle) Carson, brothers-in-law John Sullivan and Joseph Sullivan, and sister-in-law Mary Sullivan.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, Gerry’s funeral Mass and burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Roxbury, will be private.
Visiting hours at the Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech St. (corner of Union Ave.), Framingham will be Monday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m..
