The Beautiful Beginnings Maternity team at MetroWest Medical Center participated in a comprehensive emergency preparedness drill this week, practicing how to handle critical situations to make sure patients stay safe when every second counts.
Led by Beautiful Beginnings Director of Nursing Jennifer Kingsbury and interim educator Cathy Curbow, the training began with an educational session focused on placental abruption—a serious complication that presents a life-threatening emergency for both mother and baby. Afterward, the team jumped into a live simulation that involved a simultaneous postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal code.
“Educating our staff on recognizing and responding to these types of emergencies is crucial to ensuring we can manage a real-life emergency,” says Kingsbury. “Drills allow us to improve our technical skills as well as strengthen our communication. This leads to better patient outcomes and allows our staff to feel ready to handle a real-life emergency.”
The exercise brought together staff from across the hospital, including 19 registered nurses, six physicians spanning obstetrics, anesthesiology, and intensive care, one respiratory therapist, and two members of the hospital’s blood bank team. Organizers say this kind of teamwork is exactly what’s required to handle real-life maternal and newborn emergencies.
