FRAMINGHAM – The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Medal of Liberty was presented to the family of Private First Class Dominic Surro on Friday, November 11, 2022, during the City of Framingham’s Veterans Day ceremony.

In total 10 medals of Liberty were awarded on Veterans Day in Nevins Hall in the Memorial Building, with five of the Gold Star families in attendance.

Surro resided in Framingham on Arthur Street when he was drafted in the United States Army.

Private First Class Dominic Surro was attached to Company B, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division.

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, during the invasion of France, he gave the ultimate sacrifice when he died from a sniper’s bullet after successfully landing at Omaha Beach and making his way to the seawall.

Accepting the Medal on behalf of Private First Class Dominic Surro was his niece, Jo-Ann Surro, from Framingham.
