FRAMINGHAM – The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Medal of Liberty was presented to the family of Corporal Robert Walter Tompkins on Friday, November 11, 2022, during the City of Framingham’s Veterans Day ceremony.

In total 10 medals of Liberty were awarded on Veterans Day in Nevins Hall in the Memorial Building, with five of the Gold Star families in attendance.

Tompkins resided in Wellesley Hills on Walnut Street when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

At one time he lived in Framingham on Eames Street.

Corporal Tompkins while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division in the Guadalcanal Campaign, Solomon Island gave the ultimate sacrifice when he died from wounds received in action which led to his death on October 16, 1942.

The City of Framingham will send the Medal of Liberty to his great nephew, James Frohock, from Rutland.
