SOUTHBOROUGH – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced Friday night, June 4, through Sunday morning, June 6, drivers on I-90 eastbound and westbound in Westborough and Southborough will have reduced lanes of travel and westbound traffic will be shifted to the other side of the highway.

On this weekend, a “trial run” will be held to test the I-90 temporary traffic set up for the project to replace 8 bridges this summer.

The goal is to make sure the traffic shift and reduction will run as smoothly as possible during the actual bridge replacement weekends from June 18 through August 16, 2021.

Drivers using I-90 from Friday night, June 4, through Sunday morning, June 6, will have their travel lanes on I-90 reduced from three to two from Route 9 in Framingham to I-495 in Hopkinton.  Drivers should anticipate traffic slowdowns.

During the “trial run,” starting at 7 p.m. on June 4, I-90 will be reduced from three to two lanes in each direction within the project area.  Westbound (WB) traffic will be shifted through a median crossover to the I-90 eastbound (EB) side.  A concrete median barrier will be put in place to protect WB travelers from EB travelers. There will be advance signage in place to alert drivers to the configuration change.

June 4- June 6, trial run schedule (weather dependent)

All times are subject to change based on weather and actual events during the use of the traffic setups.

Friday night, June 4 (beginning at 7:00 p.m.):

  • I-90 WB traffic will be shifted through the median crossover onto what is currently now two lanes of travel on I-90 EB.
  • I-90 EB traffic will continue eastbound on the current highway using just the two right lanes of I-90 EB.

Sunday morning, June 6, at 5:00 a.m.:

  • I-90 WB traffic will be shifted across the median so that WB drivers can then travel on three lanes on I-90 WB.
  • I-90 EB traffic will have three lanes of travel on I-90 EB.

Alternate Timeframes (should weather cause impacts)

If there is inclement weather that impacts the schedule above, MassDOT will reschedule the trial run to the following dates and times and will announce it as soon as possible:

·         7:00 PM on Saturday, June 5, through 5:00 AM on Monday, June 7

There will be no impacts to local roads below the bridges during the trial run.

The reduction of I-90 from three to two lanes will result in higher than normal congestion, drivers should plan accordingly.

Drivers traveling westbound through the project should be prepared for the shift into the eastbound direction.

Although there are no direct impacts to local roads, there might be higher than normal congestion from people avoiding I-90, plan accordingly.

The project occurring this summer will seek to limit traffic congestion during peak travel times and work will be done on weekends, skipping the Fourth of July weekend.

MassDOT is replacing bridges on I-90 eastbound and westbound over Flanders Road in Westborough and Parkerville Road, Cordaville Road, and Woodland Road in Southborough as part of this project.
