FRAMINGHAM – Today is the first day of spring. It officially began at 5:37 a.m..

The first day of spring is marked by the spring equinox. Equinox comes from the Latin words aequi, which means “equal,” and nox, which means “night.” On the spring equinox, day and night are of equal length.

Spring signifies coming out of the darkness, of winter.

As a society we are emerging out of this coronavirus pandemic in spring 2021.

Spring also symbolizes re-birth and growth, and this spring many businesses and restaurants are hoping to re-open fully and grow in 2021.

Many individuals feel energized with spring, as there is more daylight, and that helps to boost mood, too.

Prior to the 14th Century, Spring was known just as Lent. The season was named after the plants springing up from the ground.

We are currently in the religious period of Lent. It will end with Easter Sunday on April 4.

Spring is an old English word that means “to leap, burst forth, spread, grow.”
