ASHLAND – Alice Marie Smart, 90 of Ashland passed away Sat. April8, 2023, after a period of declining health. 

Born in Danbury, CT, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Marcella (Newlan) Leheny and wife of the late Malcolm R. Smart who died in 2019. 

Alice received her degree from Danbury State Teachers College and worked as a fifth-grade teacher in Newton for 32 years.

She was a dedicated professional and spent summers continuing her education and ultimately earned her master’s degree plus 60 credits from Framingham State College. Her commitment to her students continued, volunteering to review curriculum, developing new programs and learning the latest technologies.  

After retiring in 1992, she and Malcolm enjoyed traveling the United States and abroad.

She was an active supporter of the Ashland Senior Center and a member of the Ashland Council on Aging.

She was a longtime parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Ashland and supported her community.

Mrs. Smart is survived by her children; Larry, Jeffrey, and his wife Angela; grandchildren; Jamie, Clint, Tom, Andrew, Adriane, Kyle and John Smart, and Taylor Pirmantgen; great grandchildren, Addison, Evans, and Samuel Smart; sister, Eleanor Kirk, sister-in-law Kay Leheny, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son Gregory and his wife Lela, daughter-in-law Vanessa, and her brothers Edward and James. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday Apr. 15th at 9:00am in St. Cecilia’s Church, 54 Esty Street in Ashland, with burial in Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland. 

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street in Ashland.  www.mataresefuneral.com
