FRAMINGHAM –  The Framingham State University men’s basketball team used a 23-4 run in the opening half opening up a sizeable lead as the Rams went on to defeat Elms College 78-63 this evening in non-conference action at Logan Gymnasium in Framingham.

Elms College suffers its first loss and is now 1-1

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Tied 6-6 just under three minutes into the game, the Rams rattled off five straight including a Julius Goines layup to take an 11-6 lead. 
  • Elms closed the gap to three on a three from Tahquell Cadle, but the Rams used a 7-0 run to take a 17-10 lead with 13:37 on the clock. 
  • The Rams took control of the game with a 23-4 run late in the first half to take a 40-16 lead with just under four to play. The Rams took a 43-23 lead into the locker room. JD Okafor paced the Rams in the opening half with 15 points on 5-of-5 from the floor. 
  • In the second half, the Rams maintained the sizeable lead, but Elms did not go away. The Blazers chipped away late and were able to close the gap to 11 on a jumper with just over three to go, but the Rams responded with a three from Ryan England pushing the lead back to 14.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Okafor led all scorers with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-10 from the floor. He added six boards, an assist and a block. 
  • Goines finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists, while England finished the contest with 10 points as he connected on 3-of-5 from behind the arc. 
  • Jahden Erold added 10 points off the bench for the Rams and chipped in with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. 
  • The Blazers were led by 12 points from Jaijuan Macklin who added five boards, two assists, a steal and a block. 
  • Cadle finished the game with nine points, while Vashon Wilson added eight off the bench. 

UP NEXT: 

The Rams are back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Western New England Tournament, while Elms hosts SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday at 7 p.m.
