FRAMINGHAM – Ernest F. “Ernie” Hartland, a longtime resident of Hopkinton, passed away Monday, October 17, 2022 after a period of declining health.

Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Ernest W. Hartland, Jr. and Mary (Meyers) Shechet, and the beloved husband of the late Maureen F. (Conway) Hartland for 60 years.

Ernie was raised and educated in Framingham and was a graduate of Framingham High School. He and Maureen wasted no time, married and started their family shortly after. Ernie’s work took them from Milford and Framingham to Ohio, and back to Ashland finally settling in Hopkinton in 1978.

He enjoyed a long career as a Quality Engineer in Medical Devices for companies like Kenmore Research, American Optical, Boston Scientific and Telemed. He was also an entrepreneur with two start up business, carpet

& upholstery cleaning and medical device manufacturing.

An avid reader, Ernie was a skilled handyman and was always tinkering around the house. There was no project too big or too small that he couldn’t handle. He and Maureen loved to travel, particularly to Maine and Tennessee. Admitted foodies, they had favorite restaurants on their travels and would schedule their trips accordingly. When leaving a room, he often quoted General MacArthur “I shall return” almost as if to offer a warning to us all.

Always taking care of and generous to his family, Ernie is survived by his children, Glenn & his wife Debbie of Northbridge, Anne-Marie Midgette of Northbridge, and Christine Shkreli & her husband Tom of Hopkinton, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, his siblings, Kent, Craig & his wife Melanie, and Paula Anspach, his sister in law, Theresa Fremault & her husband Larry of Hopedale, and several nieces

and nephews.

Besides his dear wife Maureen, Ernie was predeceased by his son, Thomas, his great grandson Jakob, and his brother, Richard.

The family would like to thank Richard “Rich” Tucker, for his time and friendship with Ernie during the last 18 months of his life.

Family and friends will honor and remember Ernie’s life by gathering for his graveside services on Saturday morning, November 5th in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Mt. Auburn St., Hopkinton.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Ernie’s name to: VNA Hospice and Palliative Care, 100 Trade Center, Suite G-500, Woburn, MA 01801. Or, Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, https://alzfdn.org/
