FRAMINGHAM – The Framingham Police Department will give a presentation on school resource officers (SROs) at the top of the Police Advisory Committee’s monthly meeting on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m.
Officer Kathy McGrath and Officer Wayne Jordan will be presenting. Officer Kathy McGrath is the school resource officer for Framingham elementary and middle schools and Officer Wayne Jordan is the school resource officer for Framingham High School.
The purpose of school resource officers is to promote school safety and security while maintaining a positive school climate for students and staff. SROs were put into schools in response to an increase in mass shootings and school crime in the 1990s.

However, some see school resource officers as controversial figures who criminalize students, especially students of color, and have long called for their removal from schools. Since the pandemic, an uptick in school violence has called for the return of SROs, but with a focus on intervention and restorative justice practices.
SROs undergo mandatory and specialized training that includes child development, de-escalation tactics, and diversion strategies.
