FRAMINGHAM – Maddie Burgess, 14, of Framingham qualified for nationals over the weekend in the shot put at the USATF Region 1 Junior Olympics Championship Meet at Bowdoin College in Maine.

Burgess is an active member of the Waltham track & field program.

Burgess, competed in the 15-16 year old age group this past weekend in Maine.

The top eight competitors from New England qualify for region 1 meet that includes New England, Maine, Connecticut, Adirondack, New York and Long Island associations.

The 15-16 age group throws a heavier shot, than the 14 years olds. Burgess had two weeks to practice with the heavier shot, before the competition.

At this past weekend’s region 1 meet, Burgess placed sixth with a throw of 6.77 meters.

The winner was Ayanie Thomas with a throw of 9.98 meters.

The top 8 qualify for nationals. Burgess was the only 14 year old in the competition.
