BOSTON – Senate President Spilka Tweeted today “A woman’s right to choose is a woman’s right to choose. Period. In Massachusetts, abortion is, and will remain, safe and legal. But we must continue to fight for the rights of our fellow Americans, and save the lives of women and girls.”

Earlier this week, Politico published a draft ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which indicted the country’s highest court could rule to overturn Roe vs Wade.

The ruling would not be official until it is released, but the draft indicated the Court would overturn the abortion rights law.

“We must state loud and clear that a woman’s ability to control her reproductive future is fundamental to her freedom, her agency and her humanity. This is the emergency that we all feared. But this is America, and we all have a voice. WE WILL NOT BE SILENT,” Tweeted the Senate President, a Democrat from Ashland.

Today at 11 a.m. Senate President Spilka, Boston mayor Michelle Wu, House Speaker Ron Mariano, Reproductive Equity Now, ACLU of Massachusetts, and Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts held a press conference on the steps of the Massachusetts State House to discuss the future of abortion protections.

The press conference was organized after the draft majority opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was made public Monday night. The draft opinion would overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that guaranteed federal constitutional abortion protections.
