FRAMINGHAM – More than 72% of residents in the City of Framingham have received the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest data from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,.

The Commonwealth has 54,522 individuals out of 75,000 residents vaccinated for 72.7%.

The Commonwealth’s overall vaccination rate is around 68 to 69%.

So has Framingham reached herd immunity?

“For COVID-19, the percentage of the population that needs to be infected to achieve herd immunity is estimated to be between 70% and 90%, and this is assuming lasting immunity is possible,” according to the CDC. But the variants of COVID-19 are having a big impact on that herd immunity theory.

And COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Massachusetts.

The City of Framingham has a vaccine equity initiative. “Guided by the State’s framework, the Equity Initiative includes people of color, immigrants/recent arrivals, homebound and disabled individuals, people living in low-income and congregate housing, and those with multiple/complex medical needs,” said the City in a press release on Wednesday.

Last week, clinics were held at Framingham Public Health Nursing Office, Dennison Park, and Farm Pond, said the City of Framingham. However, the City of Framingham does not publicize its clinics.

Since Wednesday, March 24, 5,718 vaccinations (Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson and Johnson) have been administered under the Equity Initiative.

Age-wise, the Commonwealth data showed 90.9% of individuals age 75 or older have been vaccinated.

In Framingham, that number is at 83.3%.
