VIDEO: Mayor Says ‘We Can Not All Get Together’ This Memorial Day

FRAMINGHAM – Framingham Mayor Yvonne Spicer in “an abundance of caution” has cancelled the city’s Memorial Day events.

Mayor Spicer posted a video on her campaign Facebook page today, May 22 about Memorial Day.

“Memorial Day is a time when we stop, reflect, and give thanks to the men and women who have lost their lives in the fight for our freedom,’ said the City’s first Mayor.

“Each year, Framingham honors its Gold Star families by presenting them with the Massachusetts Medal of Liberty at a special Memorial Day Program. This year, out of an abundance of caution, we have had to cancel the event due to the pandemic. However, to honor our veterans, we have hung American flags along Union Avenue, Concord Street, and McGrath Square,” said the mayor.

“Often, we gather on Memorial Day and the weekend leading up to it, with friends and family to remember the brave men and women who gave their all. This year will be different. We cannot all get together, as we must continue to practice social distancing,” said the Mayor.

“We can, however, extend our gratitude and thanks by honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep America safe. I encourage you all over this long weekend to be safe, continue to practice social distancing, wear a cloth face covering when out in public, and continue to wash your hands. Also, say a prayer or raise the flag to honor those who have lost their lives serving this country,” concluded the Mayor.

Just a reminder the City’s beaches, playgrounds, athletic fields are all still closed due to the pandemic.
