ASHLAND – Two legislators have filed a bill to name a bridge in Ashland the Harold Wadhams Gates bridge, in honor of the late World War II Veteran.

Gates died in July of 2022, at the age of 102, in Sun City Center, Florida, where he and his wife Evelyn had happily made their home in recent years.

State Representatives Jack Patrick Lewis and Paul Schmid III filed the bill last week to name the Fountain Street bridge in the Town of Ashland after the Army Air Corp pilot.

The bill calls for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to erect Gates name on the bridge.

Born on May 1, 1920 in Ashland, Gates was part of the “the greatest generation.”

He served during World War II as an Army Air Corp pilot flying a B24 Liberator out of the air base in Wending, England, bombing targets in Germany where his final mission with the 392 bomber group was to target the city of Hallein, Austria, which was the supply chain to Hitler’s mountain retreat.
