FRAMINGHAM – The MetroWest Cancer Center on Union Avenue in Framingham is now part of Tufts Medical.
The Cancer Center is no longer a part of Tenet Healthcare, which owns MetroWest Medical Center’s Framingham Union Hospital and Leonard Morse Behavioral Center
SOURCE broke the news in April of 2022, that Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare planned to close the Cancer Center in Framingham. Tenet’s Health’ s plan was to close the Cancer Center and have patients go to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester for treatment. Tenet filed with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in May to reduce services in Framingham.
MetroWest Medical Center’s CEO Ava Collins resigned shortly after the announcement to close the cancer center.
The deal to sell to Tufts Medical was announced in November 2022, with the cancer center continuing to provide much-needed medical oncology and radiation oncology services for more than a thousand patients primarily from Framingham, Marlborough and Natick.

Talks with Tufts Medical began even before the July hearing with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to discuss the closure of the Cancer Center in 2022.
Spearheading the need to keep the Cancer Center in MetroWest was Senate President Karen Spilka and City of Framingham Mayor Charlie Sisitsky.

“Anyone who has faced a cancer diagnosis knows that treatment is most effective when patients can receive it in their communities, close to loved ones and without the stress of difficult travel arrangements,” stated Senate President Karen E. Spilka (D-Ashland), in November. “Months ago, I helped residents and stakeholders sound the alarm about the hardships that would result from the closing of critical cancer treatment and prevention services at MetroWest Medical Center, and so I am thrilled to hear that the partnership between MetroWest Medical Center and Tufts Medicine will move forward. I would like to thank everyone involved in this process for working collaboratively to keep these life-saving services here in MetroWest.”

The deal was finalized in December, with Tufts officially taking over the Cancer Center this week.
