FRAMINGHAM – The Framingham High girls volleyball season kicks off this afternoon, September 14 on the road against the Tigers of Newton North High School.
UPDATED: The match time has changed from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Head Coach Emily Viti had 85 athletes try out for varsity this fall.
Forty girls were placed on three teams, 14 on varsity and thirteen each on a junior varsity A and a junior varsity B team.
“We are hopeful and see a lot of potential in the underclassmen who came out this season,” said Coach Viti.
The girls volleyball program has a long-standing tradition of no captains.

“We have done a leadership committee each year for the past 7 years and it has worked out so well for the athletes. Any athlete who would like a leadership role in the program is able to. As part of the leadership committee they organize things from team snacks on the bus and warm ups to out of season training and team sessions to and end of the season banquet. This has really helped those with leadership skills take on whatever level of leadership they want with out feeling like they can’t because they do not have a title of Captain,” explained the head coach.
Half of the varsity squad this year are members of the Class of 2022.
“We have 7 wonderful seniors on the team,” said Viti. They are Liz Dionisio, Nicole Grome, Ana Cady Clouse, Paige Lamberson, Ashlyn Nichols, Sophia Carney, and Kaitlyn Shea.”
Of the 14 players on varsity, 10 have experience at that level.

Last year’s fall season did not happen due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“This team worked really hard to get together over the summer and work out and play when ever possible. We have had more athletes playing club and that will be really helpful for building the success of the team in the future,” said Coach Viti.
The Flyers home opener is Tuesday, September 21 against the Warriors of Brookline High.
The seniors on the team will be honored on October 28.
