FRAMINGHAM – The Framingham High girls volleyball season starts today, March 9.
Normally held in the fall, the girls volleyball are now part of the Fall II season, created by the MIAA, during the pandemic.
Head coach Emily Viti said the she did not hold “official try outs because we decided to keep everyone that came out. It is such a different year we felt it appropriate to take a different approach to make sure all interested athletes had an opportunity to participate for the short season.”
Viti said 52 girls signed up to play and 47 showed up for the practices.
“We have divided them all up into 3 teams and JVA and JVB both have 2 cohorts that will alternate playing and practice days. Cohort A will practice on Monday and play on Tuesday while Cohort B will practice Wednesday and play on Thursday,” explained Coach Viti.
The Volleyball squad does not have captains.
“We want all athletes to take on a leadership role whether assigned a title or not we all have the potential to lead and are invited to do just that,” said Viti.
But the volleyball team is lead this year by seniors Olivia Lincoln and Dana Goldberg.
“Our two seniors have been a part of the program since their freshman year and have both worked so hard,” said Viti. “They are great friends and they are fantastic contributors to our team and they lead by example.”
The varsity squad has 15 girls.
During the unusual COVID season, the Flyers “will play the same team twice in a week. Example today we play Brookline at home and Thursday we play Brookline away,” explained Coach Viti.
“This is different from other seasons when we would play everyone once and see them again at the second 1/2 of the season,” said Viti.

Other players Viti expects to shine this season besides her seniors are Liz Dionisio, Annaliese Edman and Nicole Grome.
“These ladies have been promoting socially distanced practice and open court while we have waited for out season to start and have offered clinics for younger athletes looking to start playing at the high school this year,” said Viti. “They have also taken the time and dedication to participate in club volleyball to improve as individuals to help our program grow.”
Coach Viti said this season is “all about the experience. We are just grateful to have an opportunity to be together, see each other and play the game we love. Our goal this season is to build our teammates up and create an exciting, positive and growth focused atmosphere.”
Framingham High graduate Brenna King is coaching the squad with Viti.
“I’m coaching over zoom and through the Hudl camera and she is basically running practices and setting up games and doing all of the stuff that I normally would do and this season would absolutely not be possible without her efforts and her hard work and her commitment to the program,” said Viti of King.
King graduated from Framingham High in 2014.
“She’s been coming back and helping out coach since then and has been full-time coaching with me the last few years,” said Viti.
“This year it’s just so much more. She’s essentially taken over the entire program and she has stepped up so big for all of us,” said Viti. This “season would 100% not be possible without her!”
