FRAMINGHAM – Jim Walsh of Framingham, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on March 8, 2023 at the age of 92.
Jim was born the third of 9 sons to Mary Greene and Edward J. Walsh in the Sodon Bowl section of Boston’s Roslindale.
He served in the Navy Seabees from 1953-1954 and was stationed in the Philippine Islands.
Following his discharge, Jim attended Northeastern University, earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree.
As a member of the university hockey team he played in several Beanpot tournaments.
He earned his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from The Georgia Institute of Technology in 1968.
Jim worked most of his life for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), finishing his career there as the Division Administrator in Cambridge, MA. In his “retirement” he worked as a building inspector, provided construction oversight at Providence and Worcester airports, and consulted as a highway planner in Malawi, Africa.
Jim was most proud of his family and was a devoted family man throughout his life. In 1960 he married Cora Norcott. They moved across the United States with each of their 4 children born in a different state. (Steve in California, Kevin in Washington D.C., Ed in Georgia and Maureen in Virginia). They settled in Homewood, Illinois where they lived for several years until Cora’s death in 1977.

The next chapter of Jim’s family life began when he married Rose Barrett in 1978 and the Walsh and Barrett families merged, adding Sean, Ian, Terrence and Consuelo to the brood of children. “Eight is Enough” and “many hands make light work” quickly became the family motto. From the start, Jim was the official engineer for every family project and wanted to instill his love of home repairs in all of his kids by making sure they knew how to swing a hammer, shingle a roof, and know the difference between concrete and cement.
Jim and Rose were involved in establishing Voice of the Faithful and remained active for 5 years. They have been devoted members of St Anselm’s for the last 20+ years. He and Rose loved to travel the world and as an engineering fanatic, Jim considered seeing major engineering projects like the Panama Canal and Channel Tunnel as highlights of his travels. Jim was a genuinely curious person who loved meeting and talking with all types of people. His tombstone reads ‘My Brothers Keeper’ and his life’s purpose was always his family, including his “Ma”, brothers, wife, children, grandchildren, and all the extended family, and ensuring everyone was happy and finding their life’s purpose.
Jim is survived by his wife Rose L.B. Walsh. Jim leaves his loving children Sean Barrett (wife Andrea), Steve Walsh (wife Heather), Ian Barrett (wife Erin), Kevin Walsh, Consuelo Staheli (husband John), Terrence Barrett (wife Kristina), Edward Walsh (wife Susan), Maureen, and grandchildren, who provided him with great joy and amusement, Abigail White (husband Anthony), Evan Barrett, Morgan Walsh, Madison Walsh, Cora Walsh, Marianna Barrett, Vivian Staheli, Caitlin Walsh, Katrina Barrett, Jackson Staheli, Savanna Barrett, Paloma Barrett, and Sabine Barrett.
Jim is also survived by brothers Billy, Paul (wife Joan), Bobby, Peter (wife Sarah), and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Mary & Edward, 1st wife Cora Norcott, brothers Fran, Buddy, Johnny, & Richie, and his sisters-in-laws Kate, Ann, Anne & Priscilla.
He was tremendously loved by all who knew him, and he will be sorely missed. Family and friends will honor and remember Jim’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln Street in Framingham on Thursday, March 16th from 3-7pm. We know Jim is in heaven smiling knowing that his
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on St. Patrick’s Day in St. Anselm Church, 100 Landham Rd., Sudbury at 10 o’clock.
Interment will follow in Edgell Grove Cemetery, Framingham.
