Framingham State University Receives $75,000 From American Rescue Plan; Congresswoman Tours Child Care Center

FRAMINGHAM – Assistant Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Katherine Clark (MA-5) visited Framingham State University’s two child care centers: The Jeanne M. Canelli Child Development Lab (CDL) and the Early Childhood Center (ECC) on Tuesday, November 1.

The CDL provides children with quality early education and serves as a teaching laboratory for FSU students interested in early learning and research.

“The path to an economy that works for working families runs through affordable, accessible child care. FSU understands this, and they’re supporting our youngest learners while preparing the early education workforce of tomorrow,” said Assistant Speaker Clark. “I was proud to lead the charge in Congress for child care relief funding, resources that kept this critical piece of our economic infrastructure afloat. I’m eager to continue championing early education programs like Framingham State’s to ensure every family has access to the care they need.”

Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark met with Framingham State University’s President, Dr. Nancy Niemi, and staff members. She toured the facilities, discussing with them the importance of early childhood development programs and her work in Congress to support child care and the early education workforce.

Framingham State University received $75,915 from the American Rescue Plan, pandemic relief funding that was used to maintain and expand early education options for local families and train the next generation of early educators. The ECC supports whole child development through its full-day child care programs, emphasizing free play, socialization, and creative expression in a literacy-rich environment that is open year-round.

In 2021, at the height of the pandemic, Assistant Speaker Clark secured $50 billion in relief for the child care sector and Head Start programs in the federal pandemic relief legislation, including the American Rescue Plan. As a House Appropriations Committee member, she leads the fight for increased funding for the Child Care Development Block Grants and Head Start funding every year and secured a significant increase for these programs in the FY22 spending package. In 2016, Assistant Speaker Clark co-founded the Pre-K Caucus to promote policies that expand access to high-quality early education and child care for families.
