FRAMINGHAM – Sunday is the first round of the Brazilian election.

By law, all Brazilians citizens must vote in the election, even if not in Brazil.

The Consulate General of Brazil in Boston will make available just two voting locations in its area of jurisdiction: Malden and Framingham

In Framingham, voting will take place at Saint Tarcisius Parish on Route 135 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 2.

In Malden, voting will take place at the Salemwood School, 529 Salem Street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A high turnout is expected at each voting place, as Brazilian residents of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, are scheduled to vote for President.

There are 11 candidates on the ballot for President for 4 years, but only two of them have double-digit polling numbers.

Current president Jair Bolsonaro, 67, a far-right nationalist, is being challenged by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 76, a former union leader who served as the 35th president of Brazil.

Bolosonaro is a retired military officer, who has served as the 38th president of Brazil since January 1, 2019.

Da Silva was imprisoned in 2018 on corruption charges, but his conviction was later thrown out after the Supreme Court ruled the judge in the case was biased.

Like former President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro insists the only way he will lose is by fraud.

The two frontrunners have been seen often campaigning with bullet-proof vests. And the country’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal has issued a ban on firearms within 100 meters (330 feet) of any polling station on election day.

In 2018, turnout for the first round of elections was close to 80 percent.

If no candidate exceeds at least 50 percent of the vote on Sunday, a runoff election between the top two candidates will be held on Oct. 30.

Once elected, the new president will be sworn in on Jan. 1, 2023 for 4 years.
