WORCESTER – The Framingham State University volleyball team played a pair of five set thrillers Saturday defeating Worcester State 3-2 before falling 3-2 to St. Joseph’s (ME) in a non-conference tri-match at Brissette Court in Worcester.

THE BASICS: 

Framingham State 3, Worcester State 2 (24-26, 25-20, 18-25, 26-24, 15-7) 

St. Joseph’s (ME) 3, Framingham State 2 (25-18, 15-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13) 

Framingham State is now 6-4 overall.

Worcester State falls to 1-8 overall.

St. Joseph’s in Maine improves to 3-7 overall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

Match 1 – FSU-WSU 

  • After dropping the first set 26-24, the Rams came back in the second 25-20. Worcester rebounded in the third taking the 2-1 lead, but the Rams closed the match taking the final two sets en route to the non-conference victory. 
  • The Rams were led on the attack by Anna Szymanski who tallied a team-best 19 kills with13 defensive digs. 
  • Hailey Sanders chipped in 14 kills on 34 attempts with just six errors for a .235 hitting percentage. Sanders added six digs and two blocks. 
  • Isabel Henwood chipped in with 32 set assists, four service aces and 19 defensive digs, while Malia Shields finished the game with 16 digs and four assists. 
  • Carly Beaulieu chipped in with 13 digs in the match.

Match 2 – FSU-St. Joe’s 

  • The Monks took the first and third sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-23, while the Rams took the second set 25-15 and the fourth set 25-18 forcing the deciding fifth. The Monks narrowly edged the Rams 15-13 in the deciding frame. 
  • The Rams were led by 12 kills and two digs from Sanders in the match, while Szymanski finished the second match with seven kills and nine digs. 
  • Shield led the back row effort with 23 digs and four service aces, while Emily Flaherty finished the game with 19 defensive digs. 
  • Beaulieu chipped in with 15 digs, while Henwood finished with 12 and 28 assists. 

The Rams are back in action on Tuesday when they host Northern Vermont at 7 p.m.
