FRAMINGHAM – Sheila Ward Chayes, 86, passed peacefully after a short illness on Thursday, April 14, 2022.

Sheila was born in Cambridge Massachusetts and grew up in Newton Centre.

Sheila graduated from Watertown High and continued her education at Emerson College earning a BA in English.

She then spent time living in Philadelphia, Israel and New York City. She returned to the Boston area in 1969 and lived in Framingham for the remainder of her life.

Sheila was an avid reader of history, classic literature, Shakespeare, poetry; and a daily reader of the Globe. Sheila applied her passion for the written word to her life long career as a writer and editor for Digital and Raytheon. She had a true appreciation for art and took pleasure in creating a home that reflected this value.  Sheila also had a love of travel and took many trips to destinations rich in history and art.

Sheila was a quiet soul and could spend hours with a book and her beloved cat, Clementine, on her lap.  She took pleasure in bird watching and invited many varieties into her yard with various bird feeders and treats. However, Sheila’s greatest joy in life was being a mother to her beloved Benjamin and a grandmother to her two granddaughters, Hannah and Emma.

Sheila leaves her granddaughters Hannah Elizabeth Chayes and Emma Cathryn Chayes and her daughter-in-law, Suzanne Chayes; her beloved sister Kathryn Bjork and her dear nephew and niece Steven Bjork and Karin Manchaca; her in-laws The Munteanu Family and June Lord.  She was predeceased by her brother Alfred Ward, her brother-in-law Paul Bjork and her only child, Benjamin Ward Chayes, who brought the greatest joy to her life and the greatest sorrow in leaving this life before her.

Funeral arrangements are private and under the direction of the Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech Street, Framingham.
