FRAMINGHAM – While Massachusetts students are #1 for the second consecutive year for Advanced Placement (AP) test results, students at Framingham High finished 55th in the Commonwealth for test scores.

In 2021, 2020, 2018, and 2016, Massachusetts’ graduating classes have had the nation’s highest percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher on at least one AP test, according to the College Board.

A score of 3 or above on an AP exam shows a student’s capability to complete work for an introductory college-level course in that subject area, according to the College Board, which administers the AP tests.In Massachusetts, Dover-Sherborn High had the highest percentage of students receiving a 3 or higher on AP exams with 94.4%

Other MetroWest communities in the top 20 were:

  • Lincoln-Sudbury at #2 at 93.9%
  • Wayland High at #6 at 92.4%
  • Hopkinton High at #9 at 89.8%
  • Ashland High at #13 with 87.5%

In 2021, 820 AP exams tests (not students but tests) were taken at Framingham High, according to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE).

Out of those 820 tests, 72.4% scored a 3 or higher, placing Framingham High 55th in the Commonwealth.

In comparison, 824 test were taken at Natick High and 84% received a score of 3 or higher, placing Natick High 22nd in the state. Wellesley High was at 29th.

Of those 820 Framingham High AP tests administered in 2021, 144 tests scored a 5, the highest score, with 225 scoring a 4.

Another 225 tests received a score of a 3.

Only 78 tests scored a 1, the lowest score, with 148 tests receiving a score of 2.

That means just 16% of the students received a 1 or 2 on the AP Exam.

For the 2020-21 school year, there were about 2,385 students at Framingham High.

There were about 515 students in the Class of 2021 and about 550 students in the Class of 2022.

Mostly juniors and seniors take the AP exams. Many students take multiple AP exams.

The most popular AP exam at Framingham High in 2021 was English Language, in which 149 students took the exam.

Of those who took English Language AP, 69.8% received a score of 3 or higher, with 18 students receiving the highest grade of 5. However 45 students received either a 1 or 2.

The second most popular AP exams was AP Government with 91 students.

Of those 93 tests, only 47.3% received a score of 5 or higher, with only 8 students receiving a 5, the highest score. There were 26 students who received the lowest score, a 1.

The third most popular AP exam in 2021 at Framingham High was U.S. History, where 77 students took the exam.

Of those who took the history AP exam, 68.8% received a 3 or higher, with 17 students receiving the highest score – a 5. However, 8 students received the lowest score.

In 2021, 26 students took the AP Biology test, with 92.3% receiving a grade of 3 or higher. No students received a 1 and only 2 students received a 2.

In 2021, only 13 students took the AP chemistry exam, with 69% received a score of 3 or 4, as no student received the highest score of 5. But a positive, no student received the lowest score of 1.

In 2021, 53 students took the AP Calculus AB AP test, with 75.5% receiving a score of 3 or higher.

Eleven students received a 5, the highest score, with 5 students receiving a 1.

More than 92% of the students who took the AP Spanish Language exam, received a score of 5 or higher.

Of the 51 students who took the exam, 14 students received a 5, but only 4 students received a 1 or 2.

New data show the benefits of taking AP courses and exams, including for students who score a 1 or 2.

  • AP students from all backgrounds, including those with average scores of 1 or 2, are more likely to enroll in a four-year college compared to academically similar students who did not take AP.
  • Students who earn AP scores of 2 are well prepared to succeed in introductory college courses. Students who earned scores of 2 on AP Exams perform as well or better in introductory college courses, compared to academically similar college peers who did not take AP.
  • Many students who first score a 1 or 2 on an AP Exam take further AP courses and score higher.
