FRAMINGHAM – Former two-term City Councilor Margareth Shepard, who chose not to seek a third term on the Framingham City Council, announced today, January 28, she is running for the new majority-minority Middlesex 6th District in Framingham.
Shepard is the first candidate to announce in that newly-created district.
The State legislature carved out the new district after the 2020 census. The Commonwealth said the district will have a majority of diverse residents, and thus why it is called a “minority-majority” district.
Voters will elect an individual for the seat that has no incumbent in November 2022.

As a Brazilian American who has lived and operated a business in Framingham for 30 years Shepard said in a press release she is “proud to be a strong advocate for social justice and equality who has worked and advocated for immigration reform for the past 15 years.”
Shepard was the first Brazilian American elected to a City Council seat in Massachusetts when she won the 2017 election to represent Framingham’s District 7. Prior to that she was an elected Town Meeting member serving on the Ways and Means committee, and she served as the Treasurer and Outreach Co-
Chair of the Framingham Democratic Committee. She was also appointed to serve as a Commissioner on the MetroWest Commission on the Status of Women and she was elected as the Chair of the first Massachusetts Brazilian American Citizens Council.

In 2016 Shepard founded the Brazilians for Political Education movement that has been increasing voter registration and citizens’ participation in Massachusetts elections. She is a board member and Secretary of the Brazilian American Center – BRACE and the Brazilian Women’s Group board volunteer.
Shepard is a frequent guest host on Webradio Scalabrine and Insuperáveis in Framingham.

Commonwealth to improve quality of life, protect the environment, create opportunities for small businesses and to advance women’s rights, civil rights public education.”
