ASHLAND – Walter LLewellyn Brewer, 89, of Ashland and Alva, Florida passed away at his winter home on February 8, 2021.

A resident of Ashland for 62 years, he was born in Newton, the son of Raymond and Elizabeth Brewer. 

Wally was predeceased by his wife Hilda in October, 2013.

He is survived by his daughter Jane, and his son Jim and his wife Colleen; his grandchildren Kim and Craig Brewer and Sean and Dan Pyne; six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.   He was predeceased by his siblings Arlene, Ray, Bob, and twins Frank and Charlie.

After graduating from trade school, Walter joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the destroyer USS Robert A Owens from 1951-1954.

He later worked for the Mass Civil Defense aka MEMA in Framingham, retiring in 1996. 

Wally was also a part time Ashland Policeman for over 40 years, serving as the Captain of the Ashland Auxiliary Police until retiring in 2009. 

Active in town, Wally was a familiar figure as a member of the Ashland Lions and Ashland VFW. 

He also served on the Ashland Day Committee and was honored as Ashland Citizen of the Year in 2016. 

Calling hours will be held on Friday, April 23 from 5-7 p.m. at the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main Street in Ashland. 

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
