5. We have all heard that our plant pollinators and their habitats are in serious decline. What is being done and how you can help is the subject of Dr Gegear’s talk tonight at St. Andrew’s Church at 7:30 p.m. Dr Gegear has been studying the natural ecosystems of bees and butterflies whose needs cannot be satisfied by non-native plants in New England. Assisting him are Beecologists, citizen scientists, who, as they go about their daily activities, snap pictures of bees and butterflies as they gather pollen or nectar from specific flowers. The snaps are entered into a database. You can be a Beecologist. Dr Gegear will discuss the threat to the natural ecosystem, with particular reference to bees and butterflies. He will describe the work carried out by Beecologists using “eco technology” and how ‘eco technology” is contributing to native biodiversity restoration in Massachusetts. The event is sponsored by the Pinefield Garden Club.
