FRAMINGHAM – Mary (Hayes) Murphy, 93, of East Sandwich, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at the Pavilion Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Hyannis.
Mary was born to the late Michael and Julia Hayes on February 14, 1929 in Woodford, Co. Galway, Ireland and attended school in Portumna, Co. Galway where she learned the trades of housekeeping, cooking, and domestic economy.
Upon immigrating to America in 1952 at the age of 23, she married her husband, Dennis “Chris” Murphy in 1955 and they settled in Framingham, where they raised their three beloved children, Michael, Maureen and James.
Mary worked for the Town of Framingham for many years as a crossing guard, assisting children as they walked to and from school each day. In 1989, Mary moved to Sandwich with her husband, Chris where they spent many years together in retirement and divided their time between FL, MA and Lismore, Ireland. Mary was predeceased by her husband in 2006.
Mary found joy in the simple things in life, spending time with her friends and family, especially her siblings and extended family, traveling home to Ireland, attending church, listening to Irish music, playing cards (she especially loved the game pitch and 110), picking through various yard sales on the weekends and reading. She made the best apple pies and Irish bread, especially her famous brown bread, many roasted chickens, pot roasts and boiled dinners.
She became a “granny” in 1983, and enjoyed spending time with her six grandchildren and eventually, seven great-grandchildren, caring for them in countless ways as she sang songs, read stories, and fed them, up until the final weeks of her life.
Mary was predeceased by her parents Michael and Julia Hayes, her sisters Anne Phillips, Sheila Cashman, Winifred “Una” Hayes, and her brothers Martin, John, and Patrick Hayes. She is survived by her sisters Catherine “Sis” Burke and Eileen Shaughnessy, both of Ireland, sister Bridget “Dee” Gibbons of New Hampshire, her son Michael Murphy and his wife, Susan of Ashland, daughter Maureen Clancy and her husband, Jerome of East Sandwich, and son James Murphy and his wife, Meg of Mashpee, her six grandchildren Matthew, Maura, Jennifer, Kate, Daniel, Michael, seven great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful nursing staff that cared for her at the Pavilion and for the support they provided to the family
