FRAMINGHAM – Three individuals applied by deadline to fill the District 2 School Committee seat left vacant when Ricky Finlay resigned.
The deadline to submit an application for the District 2 seat was Friday, May 27.
The individuals who applied are former School Committee member Donald Taggart III, David Gordon, and Brandon Ward.
Taggart is a retired educator who has previously served on the Framingham School Committee.
Ward is a senior program manager for fellowship operations at the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard’s Kennedy School.
Gordon is Director of Finance & Administration for the Westborough Public Schools.
Ward and Gordon both applied to fill the School Committee seat when Karen Foran Dempsey died.
Finlay received the votes to fill that seat.

When the seat was on the ballot in November 2021, Finlay sought election to the 2-year seat. He was unopposed and won. Neither Gordon nor Ward chose to run for the seat.
The position pays a stipend of $5,000 per year. It will be prorated from the date of the Oath of Office through December 31, 2023.
The eight members left on the School Committee and the 11 members of the City Council will hold a joint meeting into appoint someone to fill the rest of that seat’s term.
“A joint meeting of the City Council and the remaining School Committee members shall be held within 45 days from today, May 31. The City Council may schedule such joint meeting during a regularly scheduled Council meeting or call a meeting for this purpose,” per the City Clerk.

City Clerk Lisa Ferguson said the individual who wants the seat must live in District 2, but specifically what District 2 looked like when Finlay was elected in November 2021.
District 2 is comprised of Precinct 3 and 5.
All 3 candidates lives in District 2, per the clerk’s office.
“The person filling the vacancy must be from the District that the resigned candidate was elected from,” noted the City’s posting.
