FRAMINGHAM – Joseph M. “Joey” Kay, Jr., 64, a longtime resident of Framingham, died Friday, December 31, 2021, with his family by his side following a swift but very courageous battle against late-stage metastatic cancer.

Born in Great Barrington, Joe was a 1975 graduate of Monument Mountain Regional High School where he helped to win the school’s only state title for soccer, followed by an invitation to play semipro. An all-around athlete, Joe excelled in baseball and hockey as well.

After graduation, Joe left the Berkshires to attend Keene State College in the white mountains of NH for two years. In true love story fashion, Joe left college early in 1978 and moved to Albuquerque, NM to be with the love of his life, Patti. The couple married in Tempe, AZ in 1983 and moved several times following advancements in Joe’s career in heavy equipment sales and management. Joe and Patti lived in NM, AZ, CA, TX, KA before finally settling down in Framingham with their two young daughters in 1990.

Aside from Joe being an amazing athlete himself, he was an avid Boston sports fan with a special passion for the Red Sox. He enjoyed fishing, particularly ice fishing, golfing and basically anything involving sports and the outdoors.  His love of sports blended with his love of family coaching his daughter’s soccer teams as they grew up. Joe always found the humor in life, constantly bringing a smile to those around him. Joe had a kind, understanding nature and would drop it all to help a loved one in their time of need. He especially loved spending time with his family at the holidays.

Besides his beloved wife Patricia A. (Kane) of Framingham, Joe is survived by his daughters, Ashleigh Kay & her fiancé Matt Tocci of Framingham, and Kaitlyn Kay & Ryan Murphy of Falmouth. His parents, Joseph M. Sr. & Cecilia (Small) Kay of Great Barrington, his siblings, Beth Buck & her husband Lee of AZ, Mary of Great Barrington, Stanley & his wife Rebecca of Housatonic, brother-in-law James Kane, sisters-in-law Kelley Bianco (Kane) and Gwen Sullivan (Kane), and many nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his brother, Herbie in 1974.

Family and friends will honor and remember Joe’s life by celebrating his Funeral Mass in St. Bridget’s Church, 830 Worcester Rd., Framingham on Thursday morning, January 6 at 10 o’clock. 

Interment will follow in Edgell Grove Cemetery in Framingham.
