Framingham, MA — [October 16, 2024] — Framingham State University is proud to announce the annual Swiacki Children’s Literature Festival, celebrating the joy and importance of children’s literature.
Taking place on November 7, the event will highlight influential authors and illustrators who have shaped young readers’ lives.
This year’s festival promises to inspire educators, librarians, students, and literature enthusiasts alike. It will feature award winning illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh, whose art is inspired by Pre-Columbian art. His aim is to create images and stories that honor the past, but that are relevant to people, especially children. New York Times bestselling author Ibi Zoboi immigrated to the United States from Haiti as a child. She has authored numerous titles including, S(k)in (2025); American Street; and Pride (2018), a contemporary remix of Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice. Attendees will gain insights into the creative process behind beloved children’s books and discover new and emerging voices in the field.
The festival was launched in 1986 as the David McCord Children’s Literature Festival, sponsored by the Nobscot Reading Council. Framingham State University has hosted the event since its inception, and in 2006, took over coordination of the event. In 2014, the festival was renamed the Swiacki Children’s Literature Festival at Framingham State University in recognition of the efforts and support of its alumnae donors, Nancy and Janina Swiacki.
Event Highlights:
- Guest Authors and Illustrators: Meet award-winning author Ibi Zoboi and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh who will share their experiences and insights on creating impactful children’s books, and the power of diverse stories.
- Workshop: Gain valuable knowledge on emerging children and young adult literature at the “What’s New in Children’s Literature?” with Dr. Laura Hudock and Samantha Westall.
- Networking Opportunities: Connect with educators, librarians, and literature professionals to exchange ideas and best practices for fostering a love of reading in children.
- Book Signing and Exhibit: Take advantage of the opportunity to purchase books and have them signed by Ibi Zoboi and Duncan Tonatiuh; view Duncan’s works in the Mazmanian Gallery.
The festival will culminate in a dinner and remarks where attendees can celebrate the impact of children’s literature and continue building connections within the community.
Registration:
The event is open to educators, librarians, students, and anyone with an interest in children’s literature. Registration is currently open and early registration is encouraged as space is limited.
