John E. Hoye, MD, 88, a longtime Framingham physician and resident of Wayland and Holliston, died Sunday, July 21, 2024 after a battle with ALS.  Born in Boston, he was the youngest of six to the late Vincent J. & Eleanor Z. (Walsh) Hoye, and the beloved husband of Audrey M. McCarthy.

John was raised and educated in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester in St. Gregory Parish.  He was a graduate of St. Gregory School and Boston Latin School.  He completed his undergraduate degree at Boston College in pre-med/biology, and later graduated from New York Medical College.  In 1961 he married Nancy Ortgier.  John served as an intern in Bridgeport, CT. before serving his country in the US Navy Medical Corps, stationed in Adak, Aleutian Islands, AK, and Alameda Naval Air Station in CA.

He returned to complete his residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Brighton, and by 1969 had finished his 2 year fellowship in cardiology at Boston City Hospital.  John went into private practice in Framingham where he enjoyed an over 40 year career.

John was a lifelong ornithologist, and a longtime bee keeper, and cultivator of heirloom apples.  He traveled the world often in search of birds, more than 6000 species in 35 countries, the Arctic, Antarctic, and every continent. He had a deep interest in genealogy and was to trace family ancestors to Co. Meath and Co. Cork Ireland, and through DNA analysis traced his family connection to “Niall of the Nine  Hostages” in Ireland around the 5th century.

John was an avid runner and completed 8 marathons.  He enjoyed cross country skiing in VT, and spent many days with his sons hiking the Appalachian Trail, completing all of N.H. and Maine. John was a city boy who set down roots in Holliston, and created a small farm on less than an acre with pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, and a giant organic vegetable garden.

A family man at heart and a proud father of 7 children,  John is survived by his wife, Audrey M. McCarthy of Wayland, his children, Patrick (Barbara) of Franklin, Eileen of Holliston, Michael (Sisi) of Holland, Dr. Vincent III (Eileen Conti) of New Jersey, Maureen McCarthy (John) of Framingham, Kathleen of Framingham, Delia Sattelmair of Utah, and Dan Hirschkop (Deborah) of Brookline, his grandchildren, Sean, Carolyn, Robbie, Jocelyn, Sara, Ann, Elizabeth, Meredith, Julia McCarthy, and Jack, Sarah, and Xiaoxing Sattelmair, his great grandson, Lucas Hoye Eddy, and his sister, Ann Van Arnum of California.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Eleanor Joyce, Agnes Ison, Rosemary McCarthy, and Vincent Hoye II.

Family and friends will honor and remember John’s life by gathering for visiting hours in the McCarthy, McKinney & Lawler Funeral Home, 11 Lincoln St. Framingham on Thursday, July 25th from 4-7PM. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday morning in St. Patrick’s Church, 44 E Central St. Natick at 10 o’clock.  Interment will follow in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.
