BOSTON \u2013\u00a0Massachusetts Governor Maura T. Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kimberley Driscoll\u00a0are extending the deadline for their portrait essay contest until 11:59 pm on February 10,\u00a02023\u00a0to allow time for more students to participate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Submission guidelines and instructions can be found\u00a0here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a tradition that each new Governor and Lieutenant Governor select a portrait\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0former Massachusetts\u00a0Governor\u00a0to hang in their offices at the State House.\u00a0Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll are asking Massachusetts students to research and suggest\u00a0a former Governor\u00a0who inspires them and should\u00a0be featured in their offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0The winners will be invited to the State House to meet with Governor Healey\u00a0and\u00a0Lieutenant Governor\u00a0Driscoll\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0unveiling of their chosen portraits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe State House is the people\u2019s house,\u00a0and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll and I want\u00a0our future leaders\u00a0to have a voice in the\u00a0symbols and messages we\u00a0choose to highlight,\u201d said\u00a0Governor\u00a0Healey.\u00a0\u201cThis is an exciting opportunity for Massachusetts students to learn more about our state\u2019s history and\u00a0determine for\u00a0themselves what makes a great leader. We can\u2019t wait to review the submissions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGovernor Healey and I will be looking at these portraits every day while we are making important decisions that impact the lives of all Massachusetts residents,\u201d said\u00a0Lieutenant Governor Driscoll.\u00a0\u201cEach time we see the portraits, we\u2019ll be reminded of the lessons we learned from these student essays. We hope that all students will participate in this unique opportunity to shape our state\u2019s future.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contest is open to\u00a0all\u00a0Massachusetts students.\u00a0Essays should be less than 600 words and should answer\u00a0this question:\u00a0Which former Massachusetts governor inspires you the most, and why should their portrait hang in the Governor or\u00a0Lieutenant Governor\u2019s office?<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students should also include at least 1-2 sentences about how they researched\u00a0their chosen governor. Essays are due on Friday,\u00a0February 10,\u00a02023,\u00a0at 11:59 pm.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMassachusetts\u00a0has a\u00a0long history of impressive governors who have left a lasting mark not only on our state but on our entire country. Students are going to learn a lot about our history\u00a0and government\u00a0through this contest, and maybe it will even spark the interest of a future governor,\u201d said\u00a0Education Secretary Patrick Tutwiler.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re asking school administrators, educators, community groups and\u00a0families\u00a0to help us get the word out about the portrait contest\u00a0to all students,\u00a0including those who attend public or private school and those who are homeschooled.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
