Both are Democrats.<\/em>\u00a0(Petroni Media Company photo)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59983&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON DC &#8211; United States Senators Elizabeth\u00a0Warren\u00a0(D-Mass.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) sent an 8-page letter with 16 questions to Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chair Matthew Nelson following up on the DPU\u2019s repeated failures\u00a0 as the State Safety Oversight Agency of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and requesting information on the DPU\u2019s timeline for corrective actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the hearing, and in response to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ct.symplicity.com\/t\/wrn\/a92b72567919412e8d979ec60bd3405f\/3284896063\/realurl=https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/download\/qfrs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Questions for the Record<\/a>\u00a0sent to him after the hearing, Chair Nelson made a series of promises and commitments about DPU efforts to improve its oversight of MBTA.\u00a0 \u201cIt is critical that DPU keep these promises and provide transparency about its progress in doing so, particularly since MBTA\u2019s safety and performance problems have persisted in the wake of the hearing,\u201d\u00a0wrote the senators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;99032&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three months ago, on October 14, 2022, Senator&nbsp;Warren&nbsp;chaired a Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs\u2019 Subcommittee on Economic Policy field hearing in Boston, Massachusetts focused on the T\u2019s consistent failure to keep passengers safe and provide reliable service, and the urgent need to increase transparency and accountability at the T and the DPU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite commitments by Chair Nelson \u2013 at the hearing and in subsequent statements submitted to Senator\u00a0Warren\u00a0\u2013 to \u201cexpand [DPU\u2019s] resources to conduct more field work and auditing of the MBTA,\u201d T riders in Massachusetts continue to face extended wait times, limited service, disabled trains, and \u201cvarious disruptions to service throughout January 2023.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59946&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese issues reveal ongoing problems with maintenance, quality, service, and transparency from the T, and continuing gaps and failures with DPU oversight,\u201d\u00a0wrote the senators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawmakers sent a detailed list of sixteen questions requesting information from Chair Nelson no later than January 26 to ensure that the DPU is carrying out its oversight responsibilities to protect MBTA riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ct.symplicity.com\/t\/wrn\/a92b72567919412e8d979ec60bd3405f\/3284896063\/realurl=https:\/\/www.warren.senate.gov\/download\/20230112-letter-to-dpu-on-hearing-follow-up-and-fta-required-actions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read the text of the letter here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59984&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In full transparency, the following is a media release from Sen.
