Governor candidate Kim Driscoll outlined their agenda for economic development for Latinos in Massachusetts yesterday. Their vision emphasizes job training, education, entrepreneurship, and making Massachusetts more affordable.

There are 30,000 Latino-owned businesses in Massachusetts that generate $4.2 billion in annual revenue and create 27,000 jobs in the state. Over the last decade, the Massachusetts Hispanic/Latino population grew from 627,000 to 887,000 (a 41% increase) and Latinos are expected to make up 35% of our workforce by 2030.

“Massachusetts is home to brilliant Latino entrepreneurs, small business owners and talent across a range of industries. Our state is strengthened by Latino residents, and they are major drivers of our economy,” said Healey. “As Attorney General, I’ve worked to partner with and support Latinos, and I will be a Governor who supports them through education, job training, capital, and support for entrepreneurs.”

“I’ve been proud to work alongside our Latino residents in Salem to grow our economy and strengthen our public schools,” said Driscoll. “Looking ahead, I’m excited to get to work partnering with Latino leaders, small business owners, and our residents to deliver that same kind of economic empowerment to every community in Massachusetts.”

[broadstreet zone=”54526″]

To kick off the day, Healey and Driscoll convened with Latino business leaders at the CIC Innovation Campus in Cambridge. They discussed harnessing the economic force of Latino businesses and ensuring that Massachusetts is a supportive and attractive environment for young Latino leaders and entrepreneurs. They also talked about their plan to ensure Latino representation at every level of their administration and ensure that state contracts are going to corporations with Latino representation on their boards to help fuel their growth.

From there, the pair headed to Chelsea, where they visited a strip of small businesses – Chelsea Boutique, Janet’s Beauty Salon, and Catrachos Restaurant. They spoke to Latino business owners about their efforts to grow their businesses. Afterwards, Healey headed to the Merrimack Valley, where she visited the Greater Lawrence Technical School. She toured the facilities with educators and students and discussed the importance of vocational education in shaping their careers.

Healey concluded her day at the SISU Center, where she spoke with young people about job training and violence prevention. Driscoll visited the Latino Economic Development Corporation in Springfield to learn about its work to support entrepreneurs. Later, she toured the South Holyoke Homes project, which will turn a series of vacant lots into owner-occupied homes and affordable rental units.
