{"id":78492,"date":"2022-08-03T16:44:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-03T20:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=78492"},"modified":"2022-08-03T17:42:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-03T21:42:51","slug":"mass-attorney-general-healey-joins-coalition-to-advocate-for-transgender-students-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/03\/mass-attorney-general-healey-joins-coalition-to-advocate-for-transgender-students-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Mass Attorney General Healey Joins Coalition To Advocate for Transgender Students&#8217; Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;53230&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BOSTON\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey today, August 3,  joined a coalition of 15 attorneys general in filing a brief\u00a0in support of a 13-year-old Indiana transgender boy who is suing his school district for banning him from using the boys\u2019 bathrooms, instead forcing him to use a single-sex restroom located in the school\u2019s medical clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The brief, filed today in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, urges the appeals court to affirm a lower court ruling requiring the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville, Indiana to allow the student to use the boys\u2019 bathrooms in his school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coalition argues that preventing a transgender student from using a school restroom consistent with the student\u2019s gender identity violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 by denying transgender students access to the same common restrooms as cisgender students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;58892&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrans kids deserve the right to be their full authentic selves at school,\u201d AG Healey said. \u201cDiscriminatory policies like this one stigmatize transgender children and put them at risk. I\u2019m joining my colleagues in calling on the court to protect their rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the brief, over 1.6 million people in the United States, including approximately 300,000 youth between the ages of 13 and 17, identify as transgender.
