{"id":60432,"date":"2022-01-26T22:22:00","date_gmt":"2022-01-27T03:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=60432"},"modified":"2022-01-27T13:59:22","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T18:59:22","slug":"framingham-traffic-commission-to-consider-rapid-flashing-crosswalk-beacon-on-edgell-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/26\/framingham-traffic-commission-to-consider-rapid-flashing-crosswalk-beacon-on-edgell-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Framingham Traffic Commission To Consider Rapid Flashing Crosswalk Beacon on Edgell Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"by-ashlyn-kelly\"><strong>By Ashlyn Kelly<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59948&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FRAMINGHAM &#8211; Framingham District 3 City Councilor Adam Steiner made a request to the Framingham Traffic Commission to install a rectangular rapid flash beacon (RRFB) at the intersection of Edgell Road, Frost Street, and McAdams Road.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The traffic congestion at Water and Edgell, along with a school on Frost Street, creates a &#8220;very dangerous situation&#8221; explained Councilor Steiner to the Traffic Commission at its meeting Tuesday night, January 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/11\/03\/updated-woman-65-struck-on-edgell-road\/\">past November,<\/a><\/strong> in fact, a local resident was hit and badly injured crossing Edgell Road there,\u201d said Steiner, who lives on McAdams with his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEdgell Road has been a priority for quite some time,&#8221; said Traffic Commission Chair William Sedewitz, who is also the City&#8217;s acting Director of Public Works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City is working on plans to improve Edgell Road, Water Street, and Edmunds Road and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/03\/08\/traffic-signal-planned-for-edgell-road-central-street-intersection\/\">Commonwealth has plans to improve Edgell Road at Central Street, with a traffic light.<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat entire corridor needs to be addressed,\u201d said Sedewitz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59945&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t envision those improvements to be made anytime soon so I do think we should be seriously entertaining this request to make interim improvements at this intersection,&#8221; said the Traffic Commission Chair Tuesday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sedewitz recommended the Commission revisit the issue at either the February or March meeting once some data has been collected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Highway administration believes these rapid flashing beacons at crosswalks can reduce pedestrian crashed by up to 47%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"324\" height=\"622\" src=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-27-at-10.23.28-AM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-27-at-10.23.28-AM.png 324w, https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-27-at-10.23.28-AM-156x300.png 156w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><figcaption>Example of a rapid flashing beacon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;53130&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the portable cameras used to collect data at the intersections has been deployed to the intersection to count pedestrians, said the Traffic Commission chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councilor Steiner asked if the season could be accounted for in the pedestrian numbers, as \u201cthe sidewalks tend to not be plowed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sedewitz said he would be \u201ccurious\u201d if the traffic from the nearby (Dunning Elementary) school would be enough but if needed, counts could be supplemented again later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo we&#8217;ll collect some information, include a proposed plan if we&#8217;re going to make some recommendations for improvements in the background material for whichever meeting it is, and we&#8217;ll proceed down that road,\u201d concluded Sedewitz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ashlyn Kelly is a Spring 2022 SOURCE intern.
