{"id":57846,"date":"2021-12-20T17:10:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T22:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=57846"},"modified":"2021-12-20T18:16:45","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T23:16:45","slug":"senate-president-spilka-recovering-from-mild-stroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/12\/20\/senate-president-spilka-recovering-from-mild-stroke\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate President Spilka Recovering From &#8216;Mild Stroke&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59947&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASHLAND &#8211; Senate President Karen Spilka, a Democrat from Ashland, is recovering from a mild stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an exclusive interview with NBC 10&#8217;s Alison King, she said today, December 20, that on November 15, she woke up with a &#8220;really bad headache.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was supposed to be at the White House that day, by invitation of President Joseph Biden, but did not attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she went to the hospital and have an MRI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MRI revealed based on her doctor&#8217;s diagnosis she had a &#8220;mild stroke,&#8221; the Senator told NBC10 Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A lot of people have mild strokes&#8221; and are not even aware of it,&#8221; said Senate President Spilka during the TV interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senate President said the only symptom she had was a headache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOURCE did a phone interview with the Senate President last Wednesday and she sounded healthy and normal. SOURCE talked about ARPA funding and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/12\/15\/senate-president-spilka-secures-12-million-to-clean-up-former-general-chemical-site\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"57418\">clean up of the former General Chemical site<\/a><\/strong> in Framingham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senate President told NBC 10 that she is expecting a full recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m fine. I&#8217;m feeling great,&#8221; said Senator Spilka to NBC 10 Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she wanted people to know, so they can be aware of symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59948&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the symptoms of a stroke?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the letters in F.A.S.T to spot a Stroke, according to American Stroke Association:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>F<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>= Face Drooping&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person&#8217;s smile uneven?<\/li><li><strong>A<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>= Arm Weakness<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 Is one arm weak or numb?&nbsp;Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?<\/li><li><strong>S = Speech Difficulty<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;Is speech slurred?<\/li><li><strong>T =<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Time to call 911<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But the American Stroke Association said other symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>NUMBNESS<\/strong>&nbsp;or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body<\/li><li><strong>CONFUSION,<\/strong>&nbsp;trouble speaking or understanding speech<\/li><li><strong>TROUBLE SEEING&nbsp;<\/strong>in one or both eyes<\/li><li><strong>TROUBLE WALKING<\/strong>, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination<\/li><li><strong>SEVERE HEADACHE<\/strong>&nbsp;with no known cause<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a developing report and SOURCE will update shortly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59946&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59947&#8243;] ASHLAND &#8211; Senate President Karen Spilka, a Democrat from Ashland, is recovering from a mild stroke.
