{"id":40100,"date":"2021-06-07T21:27:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T01:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=40100"},"modified":"2021-06-08T06:46:15","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T10:46:15","slug":"state-hires-former-framingham-health-director-wong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/06\/07\/state-hires-former-framingham-health-director-wong\/","title":{"rendered":"State Hires Former Framingham Health Director Wong"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;54526&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FRAMINGHAM &#8211; SOURCE has confirmed with two state sources that former Framingham Health Director Sam Wong has been hired by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to those two sources, including one at Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Wong will become the new director of the Massachusetts Department of Public health&#8217;s Office of Local and Regional Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The office provides collaborative, statewide leadership for the Massachusetts local public health systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of overseeing just the City of Framingham&#8217;s health department, Wong will now provide guidance to the health departments for the Commonwealth&#8217;s 351 cities and towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2020\/12\/29\/update-framingham-health-director-submits-resignation-city-says-dr-wong-on-medical-leave\/\">Wong wrote to state leaders in an email in December 29, 2020, that he had submitted his resignation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(see below) and would not return to the City of Framingham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59948&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City records show Wong had been using his vacation time between December 2020 and February 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Director Alex DePalo has been Interim Director of the Department since the start of the new year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Framingham, in a<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/25\/city-of-framingham-announces-health-director-resigns\/\">\u00a0press release, announced on February 25, Health Director Samuel Wong resigned on February 26, 2021.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 24, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/24\/mayor-announces-new-health-director-charles-needs-2-3rd-framingham-city-council-approval-to-start\/\">Mayor Yvonne M. Spicer announced she has nominated Dr. Monifa Charles to be the City of Framingham\u2019s new Health Director.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the appointment comes in the 4th year of the Mayor\u2019s term, and she is up for re-election in November, the appointment needs a 2\/3rd vote of the Framingham City Council or 8 of the 11 Councilors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Charles has worked in public health for the last 18 years, most recently working for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service Office in Raleigh, where she identified innovative models of care and collaboration in underserved areas, according to the City\u2019s press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City received 11 resumes for its Director of Public Health position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59984&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The selection committee included Mayor Spicer; Human Resources Department Director Dolores Hamilton; Chief Diversity, Equity; and Inclusion Officer Dr. Maritsa Barros and; Board of Health Members \u2013 Chair Gillian Carcia, Vice Chair David Moore, MD, and Laura Houseman, MPH, MBA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/20\/framingham-director-of-veterans-affairs-leaving\/\">May, the Director and the Assistant Director of Veterans Affairs &#8211; the entire department &#8211; quit.
