{"id":38827,"date":"2021-05-27T13:39:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-27T17:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=38827"},"modified":"2021-05-30T18:37:11","modified_gmt":"2021-05-30T22:37:11","slug":"framingham-traffic-commission-rejects-request-for-pleasant-street-crosswalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/27\/framingham-traffic-commission-rejects-request-for-pleasant-street-crosswalk\/","title":{"rendered":"Framingham Traffic Commission Rejects Request For Pleasant Street Crosswalk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Grace Mayer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;53130&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;70107&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FRAMINGHAM &#8211; <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>A request for a crosswalk with a rectangular rapid flash beacon (RRFB) located at Maynard Road and Pleasant Street, was denied by the Framingham Traffic Commission at its virtual meeting Tuesday night, May 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Traffic Commission to add a crosswalk, the section must meet six criteria, said Commission Chair William Sedewitz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intersection met 5 of the 6 criteria, but crosswalk does not generate enough foot traffic for the Traffic Commission to proceed with plans for implementing a crosswalk, explained Commission Chair Sedewitz, who is also the Chief Engineer for the City of Framingham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It fails to meet the requirement of 20 pedestrians crossing during a peak hour, said the Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data was collected over eight days, four days during this past winter and four days during this spring. The Data only counted a peak of 10 pedestrians crossing the street per hour, said the Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;54526&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exceptions could be made, though, for areas where the majority of residents are considered members of the elderly and retired community, Sedewitz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A letter of support from Angel Aguirre, the manager for Framingham Green Apartments, voiced how this crosswalk would be beneficial for the apartments\u2019 residents who are primarily elderly or disabled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As written in the email sent to the Traffic Commission, \u201cThe cross walk would allow our residents to visit nearby stores with ease and without fear of oncoming traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Sedewitz said it wasn\u2019t enough to allocate Traffic Commission funds toward a crosswalk at Maynard Road and Pleasant Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a stretch to say that would meet our crosswalk policy,\u201d Sedewitz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Framingham Traffic Commission&#8217;s next meeting will be in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59946&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Grace Mayer is a senior at Boston College studying marketing and journalism.
