FRAMINGHAM – \u00a0Massachusetts\u2019s\u00a0average gas price is up six cents from last week\u00a0($2.80)<\/em>, averaging\u00a0$2.86\u00a0per gallon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s price is 12 cents higher than a month ago\u00a0($2.74)<\/em>, and 92 cents higher than May 10, 2020 ($1.94)<\/em>. Massachusetts\u2019s average gas price is 10 cents lower than the national average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AAA forecasts gas prices to climb this week in reaction to the shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, which delivers approximately 45% of all fuel to the East Coast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the weekend, the Colonial Pipeline announced they were the victim of a cybersecurity attack and, as a precaution, shut down the pipeline, which runs from Texas to New York Harbor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this time, some lateral lines have reopened, but there is no word of when the mainline, including the gasoline line, will be operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis shutdown will have implications on both gasoline supply and prices, but the impact will vary regionally. Areas including\u00a0Mississippi, Tennessee and the east coast from Georgia into Delaware are most likely to experience limited fuel availability and price increases, as early as this week,\u201d\u00a0said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast Director of Public and Government Affairs, in a press release.\u00a0\u201cThese states may see prices increase three to seven cents this week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The longer the pipeline is offline, the larger the impact on the east coast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, foreign gasoline imports and other pipelines can supplement Northeastern supply. Other areas of the country will see little impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AAA Northeast\u2019s May 10 survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be 6 cents higher than last week\u00a0($2.90)<\/em>, averaging\u00a0$2.96\u00a0a gallon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today\u2019s national average price is 10 cents higher than a month ago\u00a0($2.86)<\/em>, and $1.12 higher than this day last year\u00a0($1.84)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
