Ostroskey said, \u201cOn January 8, 2021, I announced that for the first time on record, there had been zero child fire deaths in a calendar year. Today marks a new milestone. It has been two whole years since a child has died in a fire in Massachusetts.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last fire that claimed a child\u2019s life occurred on March 16, 2019 in Pittsfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI attribute this record-breaking milestone to the\u00a026 years of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/service-details\/student-awareness-of-fire-education-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Awareness of Fire Education Program (S.AF.E.)<\/a>. Firefighters and classroom teachers have raised a fire safe generation of children by teaching key fire safety lessons in an age-appropriate manner that fits with the state\u2019s curriculum frameworks,\u201d said State Fire Marshal Ostroskey.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;53903&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59982&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Michael Newbury, president of the Fire Chiefs\u2019 Association of Massachusetts said, \u201cThe collaboration between firefighter-educators and classroom teachers has made fire safety accessible to our youngsters who brought these messages home to their families. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far this year, there have been 12 fire deaths and 75% of the victims were people over 65. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRegardless of your age, make sure you have working smoke alarms that are less than 10 years old on every level of your home and practice your home escape plan,\u201d said Ostroskey, \u201cYou may only have 1-3 minutes to escape a typical house fire before being overcome by toxic gases and extreme heat.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59946&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on the success of the Student Awareness of the Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program, the state created the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/service-details\/senior-safe-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Senior SAFE Program<\/a>\u00a0to reduce fire deaths among what is now the most vulnerable population \u2013 seniors.\u00a0 People over 65 account for nearly half of all fire deaths in the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the S.A.F.E. and Senior SAFE Programs provide grants to local fire departments to collaborate with local schools and senior service agencies to provide fire safety education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"523\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/insurance.house_.ad_.source.2020.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/insurance.house_.ad_.source.2020.png 523w, https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/insurance.house_.ad_.source.2020-246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;52386&#8243;] STOW \u2013 Massachusetts Fire Marshal Peter J.
