Markey (D-Mass.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), and Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) re-introduced the\u00a0<em>Juneteenth National Independence Day Act<\/em>, legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. \u201cJuneteenth,\u201d observed on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is also known as \u201cEmancipation Day,\u201d \u201cJubilee Day,\u201d and \u201cJuneteenth Independence Day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which announced that, in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, \u201call slaves are free.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Juneteenth\u00a0is currently\u00a0recognized by 47\u00a0states and the District of Columbia as an official state holiday or observance. In 1980, Texas was the first state to recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe commemorate Juneteenth as the day that word of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas in 1865, but we know the struggle for true Black liberation continues,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Markey.\u00a0\u201cFor too long, we have tried to whitewash our nation\u2019s history instead of confronting the uncomfortable and painful truth. This legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday is but one step we can take to begin to right the wrongs of the past and ensure equal justice in the future.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 24, 20202, Massachusetts Gov. Baker signed a bill designating Juneteenth (June 19th) as an annual state holiday in Massachusetts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gov. Baker said the designation would help &#8220;recognize the continued need to ensure racial freedom and equality.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Framingham State Rep. Maria Robinson was part of a group of legislators who filed an act to create the Juneteenth holiday in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2020\/06\/17\/robinson-files-legislation-to-make-juneteenth-massachusetts-holiday\/\">\u201cSeeing Juneteenth celebrations across the Commonwealth has inspired all of us to take the next step and create a state holiday to formally memorialize and remember our difficult history as a nation,\u201d said Rep. Maria Robinson<\/a><\/strong>, in June 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The others were representatives Bud Willams (D-Springfield), Chynah Tyler (D-Boston), and Mindy Domb (D-Amherst), along with Senators Brendan Crighton (D-Lynn), Sonia Chang-Diaz (D-Jamaica Plain), and Jo Comerford (D-Northampton).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59982&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, and a reminder that the project of racial justice and liberation in this country remains unfinished, with so much work left to do. Marking Juneteenth as a state holiday will honor a transformative moment in our country\u2019s history\u2014emancipation from slavery\u2014while also recommitting us to ending the ongoing violence, discrimination, and injustice we continue to force Black Americans to endure,\u201d said Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill re-introduced by Sen. Markey and others would make it a National holiday, not just a state holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s long past time that we recognize Juneteenth\u2014the oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the US\u2014as a federal holiday. Last year we introduced the\u00a0<em>Juneteenth National Independence Day Act,<\/em>\u00a0and while it was blocked on the Senate floor, we\u2019re not backing down. This is a bill with ample bipartisan support and I will keep fighting until it becomes law,\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>said Senator Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cJuneteenth commemorates the day when enslaved Texans finally learned of their freedom from slavery, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Booker. \u201cToday, we celebrate Juneteenth as a reflection of our ancestors\u2019 strength, indomitable grace, and relentless hope.\u00a0Our nation has so much work left to do in addressing the legacy and trauma of slavery and systemic racism that persists to this day. Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is long overdue and will represent a step forward in the path toward accountability, justice and healing.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59984&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cJuneteenth honors the end of the years of suffering that African Americans endured under slavery and celebrates the legacy of perseverance that has become the hallmark of the African American experience in the struggle for equality,\u201d\u00a0Congresswoman Jackson Lee said.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cJuneteenth celebrates African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures. But it must always remain a reminder to us all that liberty and freedom are the precious birthright of all Americans which must be jealously guarded and preserved for future generations. As it takes on a more national and even global perspective, the events of 1865 in Texas are not forgotten, for all our roots tie back to this fertile soil from which a national day of pride is growing.\u00a0This is why we must establish the Juneteenth Independence Day, as a national holiday. Ronald Vincent Myers, Sr., M. D., Founder of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation and Father of The Modern-Day Juneteenth Movement, worked so feverishly to make into a day of observance. Like Flag Day, he wanted Juneteenth to be a day of celebration and education. He dedicated his life to lobbying the legislation for Juneteenth to become the holiday it has always been, America\u2019s Second day of Independence. It was a battle few dared to fight. The load that was heavy to carry and the path was not easy to travel.\u00a0 None of that deterred the man of God, my husband, from his faith nor the path that was laid before him. Dr. Myers believed and knew that June 19th and the 4th of July made the history of America\u2019s freedom complete. I know that the man that I called my husband, my children\u2019s father, and your Doc, is smiling from heaven knowing that finally Juneteenth is receiving the recognition it justly deserves.\u00a0 It was a long time coming,\u201d\u00a0said Sylvia Holmes-Myers, widow of Rev. Ronald V. The\u00a0Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, introduced thanks to the continued leadership by Senators Markey, Smith, and Booker is rooted in the spirit of hospitality and furthers these industry efforts\u00a0to\u00a0strengthen businesses, elevate employees, and better serve our communities,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Chip Rogers, President and CEO of the American Hotel &amp; Lodging Association.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Creating a new national holiday for Juneteenth brings even greater meaning to the unifying power of travel\u2014with the holiday having the potential to help the nation heal and create a more perfect union,\u201d\u00a0said Tori Barnes, U.S. Travel Association Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Policy.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cIt also makes a lot of economic sense. According to our estimates, under normal conditions, a new holiday weekend in June would spur 46 million Americans to travel, which would generate $17.4 billion in travel spending\u2014directly supporting 143,000 jobs and producing $2.7 billion in government tax revenue.\u00a0In the end, it\u2019s about appreciating our shared history and collective future, while furthering our commitment to listen, to educate, and to engage in necessary conversations.
