{"id":29820,"date":"2021-02-22T14:53:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T19:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=29820"},"modified":"2021-02-22T15:40:03","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T20:40:03","slug":"milford-regional-medical-center-nurses-vote-overwhelmingly-to-unionize-join-mass-nurses-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/22\/milford-regional-medical-center-nurses-vote-overwhelmingly-to-unionize-join-mass-nurses-association\/","title":{"rendered":"Milford Regional Medical Center Nurses Vote Overwhelmingly To Unionize &#038; Join Mass Nurses Association"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The following is a press release from the Massachusetts Nurses Association submitted to SOURCE media.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59946&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MILFORD &#8211;  The approximately 525 registered nurses of Milford Regional Medical Center (MRMC) have voted overwhelmingly to form a union and join the Massachusetts Nurses Association, empowering nurses to speak up together and secure lasting improvements that will benefit patients, nurses, and the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Labor Relations Board oversaw a mail-in election that took place from January 29 to February 19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vote counting on February 22 by NLRB officials was observed via Zoom by MRMC nurses and representatives of the hospital and nurses voted by a strong majority to join the MNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the best day ever! For years, we have been trying to get hospital executives to listen to us and help us better care for our patients,\u201d said Karen Kerr, RN on MRMC\u2019s MP1 unit who has been caring for COVID patients. \u201cWhen the pandemic hit, the importance of our work and the need to properly support nurses so we can keep our community safe became abundantly clear. Now that we have formed our union, we can help build a strong, safe, satisfied workforce and make positive change for our patients and our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;58610&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Association is the largest union and professional organization of nurses and healthcare professionals in Massachusetts. It represents 23,000 members in healthcare facilities across the state, including nurses at 70 percent of the Commonwealth\u2019s acute care hospitals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Association is led by a board of directors that is directly elected by its membership and consists of frontline nurses and other healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Association president and practicing ICU nurse Katie Murphy congratulated the Milford nurses for their dedication to safe patient care and supporting each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen nurses are organized in a union, patients benefit greatly, as does the entire community,\u201d Murphy, a Framingham resident said. \u201cNurses at Milford Regional Medical Center now have an equal seat at the table with management to improve their working conditions, protect their nursing practice and address issues impacting patients under their care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"440\" height=\"629\" src=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/dental.advertising.sept_.source.house_.ad_.20.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18849\" srcset=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/dental.advertising.sept_.source.house_.ad_.20.png 440w, https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/dental.advertising.sept_.source.house_.ad_.20-210x300.png 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>MRMC nurses are planning to move quickly to negotiate their first contract with the hospital. They have already begun the process of gathering feedback from each other to develop contract proposals that will address the unique needs of MRMC nurses and patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MRMC nurses came together to improve conditions at the hospital and provide safe high-quality care when they filed with the NLRB\u00a0to join the MNA in December. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problems surrounding\u00a0the hospital\u2019s response to the COVID-19\u00a0pandemic made forming a union even more urgent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this month,\u00a0nurses held a rally as voting began\u00a0and celebrated having a more powerful voice as they looked forward to sitting down as equals with hospital management and negotiating critical improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;53820&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Founded in 1903, the Massachusetts Nurses Association is the largest union of registered nurses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
