{"id":28225,"date":"2021-02-01T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-02T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=28225"},"modified":"2021-02-02T12:59:46","modified_gmt":"2021-02-02T17:59:46","slug":"ftc-approves-settlement-with-zoom-over-allegations-company-misled-consumers-about-its-data-security-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/01\/ftc-approves-settlement-with-zoom-over-allegations-company-misled-consumers-about-its-data-security-practices\/","title":{"rendered":"FTC Approves Settlement With Zoom Over Allegations Company Misled Consumers About Its Data Security Practices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The following is a press release from the Federal Trade Commission<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;53820&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Trade Commission finalized a settlement with Zoom Video Communications, Inc., over\u00a0allegations it misled consumers\u00a0about the level of security it provided for its Zoom meetings and compromised the security of some Mac users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/cases\/1923167_c-4731_zoom_final_order.pdf\">final order<\/a>\u00a0requires Zoom to implement a comprehensive security program, review any software updates for security flaws prior to release and ensure the updates will not hamper third-party security features. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zoom had previously claimed it offered end-to-end encryption for its videoconference software, which would mean only the people participating in a call could access its contents.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;58845&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company must also obtain biennial assessments of its security program by an independent third party, which the FTC has authority to approve, and notify the Commission if it experiences a data breach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After receiving 12 comments on the proposed settlement, the Commission voted 3-2 on January 19, 2021 to finalize the settlement and to send responses to the commenters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59947&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acting Chair Rebecca Kelly Slaughter\u00a0and\u00a0Commissioner Rohit Chopra\u00a0each issued dissenting statements. Commissioner Christine S.
