{"id":23169,"date":"2020-11-24T13:12:37","date_gmt":"2020-11-24T18:12:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=23169"},"modified":"2020-11-24T13:12:39","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T18:12:39","slug":"17-5-million-settlement-with-home-depot-over-data-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2020\/11\/24\/17-5-million-settlement-with-home-depot-over-data-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"$17.5 Million Settlement With Home Depot Over Data Breach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;58610&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0BOSTON &#8211; Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey today, November 24, announced that her office secured $525,000 in a settlement with The Home Depot, Inc. resolving a multistate investigation of a 2014 data breach that exposed the payment card information of approximately 40 million consumers nationwide, including consumers who shopped in 45 Home Depot stores in Massachusetts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funds are part of a $17.5 million settlement with the attorneys general of 45 other states and the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRetailers must take meaningful steps to protect consumers\u2019 credit and debit card information from theft when they shop,\u201d said<strong> <\/strong>Healey. \u201cThis settlement ensures Home Depot complies with our state\u2019s strong data security law and requires the company to take steps to protect consumer information from illegal use or disclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59945&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The breach occurred when hackers gained access to The Home Depot\u2019s network and deployed malware on the company\u2019s self-checkout point-of-sale system. The malware allowed the hackers to obtain the payment card information of customers who used self-checkout lanes at The Home Depot stores throughout the U.S. between April 10, 2014 and Sept 13, 2014, including 45 in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the $17.5 million total payment to the states, The Home Depot has agreed to implement and maintain a series of data security practices designed to strengthen its information security program and better safeguard the personal information of consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59947&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the company has agreed to the following information security provisions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Employing a duly qualified Chief Information Security Officer reporting to both senior or C-level executives and the Board of Directors regarding The Home Depot\u2019s security posture and security risks;<\/li><li>Providing resources necessary to fully implement the company\u2019s information security program;<\/li><li>Providing appropriate security awareness and privacy training to all personnel who have access to the company\u2019s network or responsibility for U.S. consumers\u2019 personal information;<\/li><li>Employing specific security safeguards with respect to logging and monitoring, access controls, password management, two factor authentication, file integrity monitoring, firewalls, encryption, risk assessments, penetration testing, intrusion detection, and vendor account management; and<\/li><li>Consistent with previous state data breach settlements, undergo a post settlement information security assessment which in part will evaluate its implementation of the agreed upon information security program.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The other states participating in this settlement include: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59948&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Massachusetts, this case was handled by Assistant Attorney General Sara Cable, Chief of the Data Privacy &amp; Security Division. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AG\u2019s new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/data-privacy-and-security-division\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Data Privacy and Security Division<\/a>\u00a0protects consumers and their families from the rise of threats to the privacy and security of their data in the digital economy.
