{"id":19241,"date":"2020-09-26T12:31:58","date_gmt":"2020-09-26T16:31:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/?p=19241"},"modified":"2020-09-26T12:34:31","modified_gmt":"2020-09-26T16:34:31","slug":"video-massdot-announces-7th-annual-safe-streets-smart-trips-high-school-video-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/index.php\/2020\/09\/26\/video-massdot-announces-7th-annual-safe-streets-smart-trips-high-school-video-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO: MassDOT Announces 7th Annual Safe Streets Smart Trips High School Video Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>The following is a press release from MassDOT submitted to SOURCE media<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;51611&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BOSTON &#8211;&nbsp;The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced the 7th annual statewide high school video contest, Safe Streets Smart Trips, will begin on Monday, September 28, 2020<em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contest serves as an initiative within the Massachusetts Strategic Highway Safety Plan to promote safe walking, bicycling, and driving behaviors within the Commonwealth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contest, which began in 2014, encourages high school students to showcase their understanding of roadway safety across all travel modes to try to decrease pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and fatalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;80100&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"422\" height=\"527\" src=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/interns.source.aug_.2019.purple.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/interns.source.aug_.2019.purple.png 422w, https:\/\/framinghamsource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/interns.source.aug_.2019.purple-240x300.png 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 422px) 100vw, 422px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased to provide high school students with the opportunity to participate in this valuable exercise to underscore the need to limit all distractions when driving and especially to put phones and mobile devices away,\u201d&nbsp;said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Stephanie Pollack. \u201cEvery year we have been impressed by some of the powerful educational videos produced by students and I am confident that this year, even as some students learn remotely, they will collaborate and submit entries which will underscore that driving hands-free is really a life or death issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video contest, which is open to all Massachusetts high school students, features a freshman\/sophomore category and junior\/senior category. Per contest guidelines, students are asked to write and produce a 30-60 second video that focuses on one or several of the guidelines of the \u201cHands-Free\u201d law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch the 2019 winner for junior\/senior category:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Don\u2019t choose a song over a life&quot; by Northbridge High School - WINNER\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BVjM5tT9sys?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete contest guidelines were sent to high schools on September 23, 2020 and are also found at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/roadway-safety-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mass.gov\/roadway-safety-video<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are required to strictly follow COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and health\/safety precautions while making contest videos. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grand prize and runner-up videos in each category will be chosen by a MassDOT panel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning videos will be screened during MassDOT\u2019s annual active transportation conference, Moving Together, which is scheduled to take place virtually on November 17, 18 and 19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Top videos may also be used in future safety campaigns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Application deadline is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4, 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59982&#8243;][broadstreet zone=&#8221;59983&#8243;][broadstreet zone=&#8221;59984&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;70106&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On February 23, 2020, the \u201cHands-Free\u201d law was enacted throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/service-details\/hands-free-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/service-details\/hands-free-law<\/a>&nbsp;). This law seeks to help reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes involving distracted driving as a result of electronic device usage. Operators of motor vehicles are prohibited from using any electronic devices, including mobile telephones, unless the devices are set to hands-free mode.
