NEWTON – <\/strong>Newton-Wellesley Hospital announced Sareh Parangi, MD, FACS, as the hospital\u2019s new Chair of the Department of Surgery, effective May 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Parangi is a dynamic surgeon with a national and international reputation, highly sought after for her expertise in treating thyroid and parathyroid tumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNewton-Wellesley is known for outstanding surgical care\u2014across multiple specialties such as orthopedics, bariatrics, colorectal and cancer\u2014and advanced technologies including one of the fastest growing robotic surgery programs in the region. Dr. Parangi has the clinical expertise and proven leadership to further strengthen our terrific program,\u201d said Gregg Meyer, MD, Chief Clinical Officer for Mass General Brigham and Interim President of Newton-Wellesley Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Parangi previously served as an endocrine surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and is also a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At MGH, Dr. Parangi led an NIH R01-funded translational research laboratory focused on the development of targeted novel therapies for thyroid cancer. Her research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed papers and has led to numerous clinical trials to help patients with aggressive cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Parangi earned her undergraduate degree from Barnard College and her medical degree from Columbia University. She completed her residency at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), which included completion of a fellowship in molecular medicine at UCSF, a research fellowship at The Whitehead Institute and a surgical research fellowship at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Dr. Parangi was awarded a scholarship by the American College of Surgeons to attend the Executive Leadership Program in Health Policy and Management at Brandeis University, which she recently completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Parangi is Immediate President of The Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) and has previously served as Treasurer of The American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES), the most prestigious organization of endocrine surgeons in the US. She is also Secretary of the International Thyroid Oncology Group and a member of both the American Thyroid Association and American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has won numerous awards nationally and at Harvard Medical School for her NIH-funded research in the role of BRAF oncoprotein in thyroid cancer invasion. Most importantly, she prides herself in personalized care of her surgical patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a full system member of Mass General Brigham, a nonprofit organization that includes academic medical centers Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Serving its community for more than 130 years,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hospital provides a wide range of services to its surrounding communities, including medical, surgical, obstetric and gynecological, cardiovascular, emergency, orthopaedic, neonatal, pediatric, hematology\/oncology and psychiatric care\u2014with a medical staff of more than 1,000 physicians practicing a full range of specialties. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
