He is a Democrat.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;51611&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WASHINGTON DC &#8211; Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.). and Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) today announced they will introduce the\u00a0<em>Juneteenth National Independence Day Act<\/em>, legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. \u201cJuneteenth\u201d, observed on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and is also known as \u201cEmancipation Day\u201d, \u201cJubilee Day\u201d, and \u201cJuneteenth Independence Day\u201d. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which announced that, in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, \u201call slaves are free\u201d. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18) has introduced companion legislation, H.R.7232, in the Houes of Representatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Juneteenth currently is recognized by 46 states and the District of Columbia as an official state holiday or observance. In 1980, Texas was the first state to recognize Juneteenth as a paid holiday. This year marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;58610&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe commemorate Juneteenth as the day that word of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas in 1865, but we know the struggle for true Black liberation continues,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Markey.\u00a0\u201cThis legislation to make Juneteenth a federal holiday is but one step we can take to begin to right the wrongs of the past in order to ensure equal justice in the future. Today we commemorate. Tomorrow, we fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJuneteenth is the oldest celebration of the end of slavery in the United States\u2014it should be recognized as a federal holiday,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Smith.\u00a0\u201cI, along with my colleagues Senators Markey, Booker and Harris, want to make this happen. While many states already recognize this day, and it\u2019s long past time we commemorate the end of slavery as a country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>[broadstreet zone=&#8221;59946&#8243;]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe celebration of Juneteenth is about far more than remembering the day in 1865 when, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved Texans were finally freed from the bondage of slavery,\u201d\u00a0said Senator Booker.\u00a0\u201cJuneteenth is about reclaiming our history, rejoicing in the progress we\u2019ve made, and recommitting to the work yet undone. Our nation still has a long way to go to reckon with and overcome the dark legacy of slavery and the violence and injustice that has persisted after its end. Making Juneteenth a federal holiday represents a step forward in the journey of healing America is still taking.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOn Juneteenth, we remember the millions who suffered, died, and survived the crushing reality of slavery in America, and recommit ourselves to continuing in the fight for equal justice for all.
