If your town would like to expand their commitment to accessibility, apply for the 2026 SMILE Mass Floating Beach Chair Grant at https:\/\/smilemass.org\/smile-mass-floating-beach-wheelchair-award\/<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"420\" data-end=\"742\">SMILE Mass (Small Miracles in Life Exist), a nonprofit dedicated to creating accessible recreation for individuals with disabilities, has awarded its <strong data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"626\">2025 Floating Beach Wheelchair<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"630\" data-end=\"670\">East &amp; West Beach in New Bedford, MA<\/strong>, enhancing the city\u2019s efforts to make summer recreation more inclusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"939\">The donation, which will be accepted by <strong data-start=\"770\" data-end=\"785\">Mary Rapoza<\/strong>, Director of New Bedford Parks, Recreation and Beaches, supports a key recreational area that serves a densely populated environmental justice community.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"1188\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"943\" data-end=\"1188\">\u201cWest Beach has become a symbol of inclusion for our city,\u201d said Rapoza. \u201cThis new chair expands access for youth, seniors, and others with mobility impairments, especially with the opening of our fully accessible West Beach Bathhouse this May.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1424\">This marks the second SMILE Mass donation to New Bedford\u2014the first in 2015 has seen high use and community impact. The new chair ensures uninterrupted access to the beach, supported by trained lifeguards and a robust maintenance plan.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1637\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1428\" data-end=\"1637\">\u201cWe\u2019re proud to support cities like New Bedford that are taking real steps toward equal access,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1547\">Lotte Diomede<\/strong>, SMILE Mass founder and president. \u201cA beach day should never be out of reach for anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1892\">Since its founding, SMILE Mass has donated over <strong data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1721\">180 floating beach wheelchairs<\/strong> across New England. In 2024, the organization expanded its impact by acquiring and renovating a <strong data-start=\"2226\" data-end=\"2275\">fully accessible beach house in Wellfleet, MA<\/strong>, available year-round for families raising children or adults with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2358\" data-end=\"2673\">The organization\u2019s fastest-growing initiative, <strong data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2424\">Club SMILE Mass<\/strong>, provides hybrid gym and swim programs, music therapy, social groups, and job-skills training to individuals with disabilities from childhood through adulthood.
